ARTIST PROFILE
About Ann S. W. Miller
Artist Ann S. W. Miller creates fiber sculpture and jewelry that resurrect traditional handcraft methods, such as sewing, weaving, beading, knitting, needlepoint, and embroidery. From an early age, Ann has been fascinated with the process of creation. She is inspired by the colors and playfulness of Joan Miro, Yayoi Kusama, and Paul Gauguin as well as the design and grace of Alexander Calder, Deborah Butterfield, and Melissa Ichiuji. The daughter of an artist and student of mathematics and engineering, Ann enjoys melding these seemingly disparate worlds within her work, playing with the interaction between structure and chaos, tradition and innovation. She has had the pleasure of studying with some very talented artists and teachers, including Carol Cypher.

Ann is also a professional educator who has been teaching in and out of traditional classrooms since 2003. She loves working with groups, as it engenders a sense of community and encourages creativity and the sharing of ideas. Ann is currently teaching photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, and programming visual art at The Madeira School in Virginia. With a BS in Mathematics, a Master’s in education, and significant coursework in fine art and art history, Ann has a unique range of skills that she loves to share with others.
