EXPERIENCE – EDUCATION


The Madeira School, McLean, VA

August 2017-present ~ Art Teacher, Sophomore Advisor, Yearbook Advisor

Responsible for teaching fundamental and advanced visual art classes, including photography (darkroom, digital & narrative), drawing, painting, and sculpture. Developed and taught a new course, Programming Visual Art, in which students learn the Processing JS (JavaScript) language to create interactive, digital art. Worked with the English, History, and Technology departments to develop interdisciplinary projects. Advisor to the yearbook staff, who have repeatedly won Jostens’ Excellence Award. Advisor to 6-8 sophomores, meeting 3-5 times each week, guiding them in academics, interpersonal relationships, and stress management. As a member of the STEAM Task Force, helped spearhead the incorporation of eduScrum project management methodology into classrooms. Utilized grant funding received to improve STEAM course curriculum.

Summer 2017 ~ Art/Craft Instructor

Developed and executed one day and week-long classes in 3D Pen sculpture, cartooning, doodling, paper weaving, beading, and needlepoint design for ages 8-adult.

May-June 2017 ~ Fifth Grade Science/Math Teacher (Long-Term Substitute)

Responsible for Homeroom, Science (three sections), and Math (one section). Developed and executed lesson plans during permanent teacher’s parental leave. Projects included a study of human body systems that culminated in a video presentation of findings, using LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots to navigate the selected system as the students filmed and narrated its function and flow with iMovie.


January-March 2016 ~ Fifth Grade Language Arts/Math Teacher (Long-Term Substitute)

Responsible for Homeroom, Language Arts (three sections), and Math (one section). Developed and executed lesson plans over three months during permanent teacher’s maternity leave. Incorporated blended learning techniques, where possible, including IXL modules, appropriate YouTube videos, iMovie, Book Creator, and Flash Cards. In keeping with the grade’s winter Colonial Life theme, worked with girls during homeroom periods to hand-make a patchwork and embroidered quilt for the permanent teacher’s new baby. Collaborated with art teacher to develop creative Colonial Day activities and bound book covers for student writing. Participated in professional development training for blended learning & diversity.

Summer 2015-2016 ~ Second/Third and Fourth/Fifth Grade Art Teacher

Developed and executed lesson plans for six week camp program in Cartooning and Painting. Lessons included making paint from dirt and fat to make cave paintings; studying Fauvist, Asian, and Abstract art; exploring the art and zen of doodling; cartoon strips; and animation.

Performed research and analysis for client schools in education technology and its effective use. Documented and presented findings to clients and stakeholders. Developed implementation plans and provided support to teachers and administrators.

2012 ~ Fifth Grade Teacher

Developed and managed a classroom of 32 Fifth Grade students. Analyzed student learning styles and needs to inform the preparation and execution of lesson plans in all subjects, including art and design. Prepared students for the Guernsey 11+ exam (which determines secondary school placement). Succeeded in helping six of ten border-line students improve test outcomes and place into the high school of their choice. Managed student expectations and mitigated individual reactions to exam results..

2009-2010 ~ Before- and After-School Program Manager

Directed the before- and after-school program for 60 children in grades K-5. Re-vamped procedures, implementing improved safety precautions, first aid training, and broader educational opportunities. Hired, trained and managed a team of six caregivers. Coordinated with teachers and administrators to provide essential and consistent services to the students. 


2009 ~ Paraprofessional

Managed the classroom engagement of a Kindergarten student with undiagnosed communication and behavior challenges. Documented conduct and performance for psychological analysis. 


2009 ~ Tutor

Developed and executed tutoring plans for four Third Grade students at risk of retention. All progressed to Fourth Grade.
